Seizing his opportunity, Hades snatched the child into his ethereal chariot, racing away as suddenly as he had appeared. Persephone screamed; valiantly, she struggled against the outrage, but no one perceived her muffled cries. A shadowy chasm opened on the plain, where the child had been picking flowers moments earlier. Down into the darkness, Hades drove his fiery steeds. Deep into the heart of the earth, they thundered. The doorway of death closed behind them as quickly as it had appeared. They were gone. All that remained were the scattered flowers of an innocent child and the fading echoes of her cries for help. Hades and Persephone had disappeared into the Land of the Dead.
